May is National Stroke Awareness Month

Each year, about 795,000 people in the U.S. experience a stroke, which is the fifth leading cause of death and claims roughly 140,000 lives annually. Nearly 7 million stroke survivors live with long-term disabilities. Nursing staff are essential in recognizing stroke symptoms early, ensuring timely intervention, and supporting recovery.*

Blood Thinners – Anticoagulants**

Anticoagulants (blood thinners) are commonly prescribed to help prevent strokes, particularly in patients with atrial fibrillation (AFib)—a heart rhythm disorder that increases the risk of clot formation. These medications are effective in reducing the chance of a stroke by helping prevent blood clots. However, it’s important to remember that anticoagulants also increase the risk of bleeding, including potentially serious bleeding in the brain. Ongoing assessment and monitoring are key to balancing the benefits and risks in these patients.

Only those who risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go.
