National Alzheimer’s Awareness Month*

June is Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month. Sponsored by the Alzheimer’s Association. Ten early signs and symptoms of Alzheimer’s include:

1. Memory loss that disrupts daily life
2. Challenges in planning or solving problems
3. Difficulty completing familiar tasks
4. Confusion with time or place
5. Trouble understanding visual images and spatial relationships
6. New problems with words in speaking or writing
7. Misplacing things and losing the ability to retrace steps
8. Decreased or poor judgment
9. Withdrawal from work or social activities
10. Changes in mood and personality

CMS Appendix PP Definitions**

Anxiety and Anxiety Disorders: Anxiety is a common reaction to stress that involves occasional worry about circumstantial events. Anxiety disorders may include symptoms such as excessive fear and intense anxiety and can cause significant distress. Anxiety disorders are prevalent among older adults and may cause debilitating symptoms. The distinction between general anxiety and an anxiety disorder is subtle and can be difficult to identify. Anxiety can be triggered by loss of function, changes in relationships, relocation, or medical illness. Importantly, anxiety may also be a symptom of other disorders, such as dementia, and care must be taken to ensure that other disorders are not inadvertently misdiagnosed as an anxiety disorder (or vice versa).

Medications: Donepezil (Aricept)***

Used to treat mild, moderate, or severe Alzheimer’s Disease. Recommended to be administered in the evening, prior to the individual retiring for the evening. May be taken with or without food. The 23mg tablet should not be cut, crushed, or chewed. Most common side effects, nausea, diarrhea, and appetite decrease.
